The holidays are almost here so I thought I’d round up some gift ideas for sewers. Maybe it’s you who’s looking for a gift for a friend who sews…or you’d like to tell others what to give you as a present? Here’s a small list of things I’ve liked recently and that I think would make a cute surprise :) You can also check my gift post from last year with other cool ideas.
For me a gift is something that you would probably not buy for yourself on a normal day so I’m listing some special items that I think are useful but at the same time exclusive and worth the special occasion.
Buttons! The small detail that can change up the garment completely. I recently saw these new buttons from Atelier Brunette and what can I say…I love each and every colorway, soooo pretty! You can also find vintage gems on Etsy.
I think that special buttons make an excellent gift as they can be used in so many different projects….and they don’t take up a lot of space so hoarding buttons can be more doable than hoarding fabric (just sayin’ hehe).
Scissors, sewers best friend! I think you can never go wrong with giving scissors as a gift for a maker…just make sure you choose a good brand. Fiskars are my go to choice when getting universal scissors and you can find cute designs (the 8” is a good size to cut fabric comfortably). This pair of Merchant and Mills tiny scissors are just adorable (and practical for cutting thread ends etc), they come both in black and golden version.
I’d just say that there’s one thing I’ve noticed when people give/get scissors as a gift…the biggest pair of scissors might not be the best decision. I’m sure that those really long dressmaking scissors look impressive and cut nicely but most of us home sewers just end up not using them enough as they are too heavy. So when someone wants to buy you scissors…tell them they should not get the longest pair available, haha.
A sewing print! Do I need to say more? This original print by The Printed Peanut would make such a cool sewing room decoration! I started to follow her on Instagram recently and her work is so lovely, you should definitely check it out.
Cashmerette’s new book Ahead of the Curve is definitely a must in your sewing library. Not only does it cover so many different fitting examples, it also comes with five different sewing patterns. We have it at the academy and I’ve already used it so much to explain different fitting issues. Get it, you won’t regret!
And some lingerie sewing supplies, why not? I’m not going to write a novel here, you know where my shop (if not, it’s HERE, hehe) is and I’d be honoured if you chose something from there for yourself or for a friend :)
I also wanted to mention a couple of other things that are not exactly a gift but something related to Christmas.
Last year I made this wreath inspired by this one by Purl Soho, I love it! Using the same color for everything with some silver or golden beads is my kind of Christmas decoration for sure. I bought wool felt from this local shop in Madrid and the sewing process with 100% wool is soooo much better than your typical cheap poly felt (who knew, hehe).
Just a couple of days ago I discovered sewing patterns for these adorable holiday decorations by @mmmcrafts. So pretty, so special…I’d like to make one for every dear friend of mine! But we all know it takes a lot of time so I’ve decided to start with making one for Lia, haha. Also: combining greed with pink?!?! I’m so into this mix of tones!
And my last thing to share is this card box by Em and Friends. I found this brand via one of my fav illustrators Lisa Congdon and they make sweet cards for those moments when you don’t really know what to say, becuase well, life. They can be funny and sad and make you smile and make you cry…basically they have some really nice products that speak to your heart in a very direct way….but with that sweet humor we all need (check out their feed here!).
This particular product is a set of cards to give as a gift to your friend (they also have a set for lovers). Each card comes in a separate envelope, you fill it out and close it. Then your friend can open the card when he/she needs to read something special (letters include for example: You Want to Know You’re Loved, It’s Your Birthday, You Need a Pep Talk etc). Could there be a more heart warming special gift for a friend???
I hope you found something inetresting in my list! I hope you can spend your holidays in a way you’ve imagined. I hope there will be time to work on your craft during those holidays. I hope there’s nice food and good people around you.
I’ll try to write me annual recap post about my makes before the year is over…but I’d also like to pause a bit to refelct on the year and to rest, offline. If this will be the last post of the year and you’ve actually read that far…thank you! Thank you for being here :)
