Here goes another post about documenting my dresses from this summer. When I go to Estonia in the summer I usually have extra time to sew in my mom's sewing space (where I also teach lingerie classes), but this year I couldn't sew almost anything. At least compared to other years where I was able to make time for various exclusive sewing days (like in this post, haha).
This year my class schedule there was pretty tight and in the end, during the three weeks I spent there, between the classes, the Hanna bikini online course (right now only in Spanish) and family obligations, I was left with only one day of unlimited sewing time.
Sigo avanzando con la documentación de mis vestidos de este verano. Cuando voy a Estonia en el verano suelo tener tiempo extra para coser en el espacio de costura de mi madre (donde doy también las clases de lencería), pero este año no pude hacer casi nada. Por lo menos comparado con otros años donde me pude pegar un atracón de costura personal en condiciones (como en esta entrada, jaja).
Este año hice un calendario de clases bastante apretado allí y al final, de las tres semanas que estuve, entre las clases presenciales, el curso online de bikinis y obligaciones familiares, de costura “libre” me quedé con un solo día. Ese día sí que lo pasé bien y pude estar tranquilamente cosiendo a mi ritmo.

I wanted to copy a dress I had bought in spring and this was the project I chose for my “unicorn” sewing day. The original is made with a polyester knit that has a pleated effect and it has stretch in one of the directions. The pattern is curious because the ties that create the wrap effect on the front are already integrated into the bodice piece itself instead of being sewn into the side seams. I think the original dress was actually meant for you to tie the bow in the front but I've always worn it tied in the back.
I don't usually buy or make clothes with 100% polyester fabrics. This dress was an exception because I loved the style and when I bought it I knew I wanted to copy it to make more versions with other prints. When I was in the fabric stores I actually noticed for the first time fabrics identical to the dress fabric. I hadn't even seen them before, because I don't usually look at synthetic fabrics. The thing is that I didn't find any fabric with a print that would generate a specific “wow” effecto in me and having a closet full of fabrics, I didn't buy anything.
Tenía pendiente de copiar un vestido que había comprado en primavera y este fue el proyecto que elegí para mi día “unicornio” de costura. El original está hecho con un punto de poliéster que tiene un efecto plisado y es elástico en una dirección pero estable en la otra dirección. El patrón es curioso porque las tiras que crean el efecto cruzado salen directamente desde el delantero, están ya integradas en la propia pieza en vez de estar cosido en los laterales. Creo que el vestido original de hecho estaba pensado para que anudes el lazo en el delantero pero yo siempre lo he llevado atado en la espalda.
No suelo comprar ni hacer ropa con tejidos de este tipo, de 100% poliéster. Este vestido fue una excepción porque el corte me encantó y ya al comprarlo tenía claro que quería copiarlo para hacer más versiones con otros estampados. Estando en las tiendas de telas de hecho me fijé por primera vez en telas idénticas que la del vestido. Ni las había visto, porque no suelo mirar los rollos de telas sintéticas. El caso es que tampoco encontré ninguno con un estampado que sea especialmente
“wow” y teniendo el armario llena de telas, pues no compré nada.

For my first weareble muslin I chose this navy blue viscose polka dot fabric that I bought this year at Encants in Barcelona. It's a woven fabric but the dress I was going to copy is made with a knit fabric, so that's one thing to keep in mind. I've written about whether you can swap woven fabrics for knit fabrics and vice versa, using the patterns that are made for one fabric or the other (and what the main differences are) in this blog post. In this case since it is a style that is not a priori tight, it is adjusted with the ties afterwards, it is possible. In addition, the original fabric is stretchy only in one direction, so the difference is not so big.
Copying the pattern with traditional methods was a bit messy because of the shape of the dress, so I ended up tracing the bodice roughly on the paper and then adding the bow by measuring its width and checking the lengths. It reminded me of my days as a pattern making student when we had to figure out the flat pattern for many draped dresses and other fancy shapes in class. These were quite difficult exercises at first but with “solving” more and more pattern mysteries there seemed to formulate new connections in my head that eventually helped me with every new excercise. Figuring out this pattern was a nice throwback to these days.
Para mi primera prueba elegí esta tela de viscosa azul marino de lunares que compré este año en Encants en Barcelona. Es una tela plana pero el vestido que iba a copiar es de tela de punto, así que es una cosa de tener en cuenta. Yo he escrito sobre el tema de si se puede intercambiar telas planas por telas de punto y vice versa, usando los patrones que están hechos para una tela u otra (y cuáles son las principales diferencias) en esta entrada del blog. En este caso ya que es un estilo que no es a priori ajustado, se ajusta a través de los lazos después, es posible. Además, la tela original es elástica solo en una dirección, por lo tanto el cambio no es tan grande.
Copiar el patrón con los métodos tradicionales era un poco lioso por la forma del vestido, así que terminé trazando la forma de cuerpo aproximadamente y luego le añadí el lazo midiendo su ancho y comprobando los largos. Me hizo recordar mis días de estudiante de patronaje cuando desciframos en clase los vestidos drapeados y demás formas de fantasía para crear su patrón en plano. Fueron ejercicios bastante difíciles al principio pero con cada patrón “solucionado” parecía que se formulaba una conexión nueva en mi cabeza y se añadía una nueva entrada a mi biblioteca de soluciones que posteriormente podía usar a la hora de descifrar un diseño nuevo. Así que “descifrar” este vestido fue un feliz reencuentro con estos días pasados en la academia.
I made a couple more modifications to the pattern to have it like I wanted to and got down to work with that first muslin. On the photo there’s also my Apex bag.
I liked the result a lot so I quickly cut out another dress from the next fabric (another viscose from Encants, but from last year) in hopes I could finish it during a class there.
Hice un par de modificaciones más al patrón para tenerlo a mi gusto y me puse las manos a la obra con esa primera prueba. En la foto también sale mi bolso Apex.
Después de terminarlo y de que me gustase mucho, metí la tijera rápidamente a la siguiente tela (de nuevo una viscosa de Encants, esta vez ya comprado el año pasado) y lo dejé cortado ese día por si podía terminarlo durante alguna clase allí.
And indeed I did finish it, so I managed to make both dresses even though I didn't have much time. I like the red version much more than the polka dot one. I actually don't have anything in that color in my closet, until now. I've been following the colorimetry theme quite a bit while choosing my clothes (since this post a year ago) and cold and light colors do suit me very well. But it turns out that this print in red (okay, it's not a super dominant, solid red) also suits me. It has been a revelation because I think that this dress has made me rediscover colors a bit and I might even dream of a blouse or another dress in red ... I would have not believed this a couple of months ago, haha. It's also true that my summer closet does have a bit more color since I like dresses with prints. So I guess that if there will be some color change, it has to be through my summer garments. What happens with my tried and true winter neutrals...that's another story, haha.
Y efectivamente así fue, por lo tanto conseguí hacer los dos vestidos aunque no contaba con mucho tiempo. La versión en rojo me gusta mucho más que el de lunares y mira que yo no tengo nada en ese color en mi armario. He seguido bastante el tema de colorimetría (desde esta entrada de hace un año) y los colores fríos y claros efectivamente me van muy bien. Pero resulta que el estampado rojo (vale, no es un rojo super fuerte y liso) me va aún más.
Ha sido todo una revelación porque creo que ese vestido me ha hecho reencontrarme un poco con el color y hasta tímidamente soñar con alguna blusa o algún otro vestido rojo…me lo dices hace unos meses y no te creo, jaja. También es verdad que mi armario de verano sí que tiene algo más de color ya que me gustan los vestidos de viscosa con estampados, así que supongo que la entrada de color tuvo que pasar sí o sí a través de las prendas veraniegas. Lo que pasa con las prendas (casi todas ellas) neutras de invierno…ya es otra cosa, jaja.
After finishing the red dress in class, something that actually occurs a lot, happened: you show the dress, students who have a similar size triy it on, others also want to sew a dress like that one as they see it on others, let's discuss the fabrics etc, haha. That was exactly what happened the day I had my Estonian sewing friends visiting (just like last year) and Mari-Liis fell in love with the dress when she tried it on. She copied the pattern I had just used and made her own blue version which turned out very pretty.
I'm sure I want to publish this dress as a pattern so that more people can use it but right now I have so much work that I can't give any dates...but it's going to be on my to-do list for spring so if all goes as planned, by next summer there will be more dresses like this in the world!
Al terminar el vestido rojo en clase, pasó lo que suele pasar: lo enseñas, quien tiene la talla parecida lo prueba, quien dice que también lo quiere hacer, vamos a ver las telas etc, jaja. Eso pasó el día que de nuevo había convocado la quedada a mis amigas costureras de Estonia (igual que el año pasado) y Mari-Liis se enamoró del vestido al probarlo. Como ella vino otro día más a coser, se copió el patrón que yo había sacado e hizo su propia versión azul que quedó muy bonito.
Estoy segura que quiero publicar este vestido como patrón para que más gente lo pueda usar pero ahora mismo tengo tanto trabajo que no puedo…eso sí, va a ser mi tarea fija para la primavera así que si todo va bien, para el verano que viene habrá más vestidos así en el mundo!
